Places to see

La Cité  and the Pont Vieux  (old bridge)

There are countless places of interest within an hour or two's drive from Cépie. Here are just a few.

Carcassonne  ( La  Cité ) see link on home page

Carcassonne should be number one on your list, attracting great hordes of visitors in the summer, and rightly so. Despite all the tourist paraphernalia it remains a beautiful place. Ironically it was left in disrepair for centuries, and an order was given in 1849 that it should be demolished. This mobilised support for the town and restoration began a few years later, under the  supervision of  Violet Leduc

Carcassonne castle dates from the early 13th century, although parts are more ancient still, and the fortifications were added a couple of decades later.

Canal du Midi

The canal flows, starting from the Garonne  river at Toulouse,  for 254 kms  through  Carcassonne to the Mediterranean sea at the town of Sete. A major engineering project even at today's standards was undertaken in  by  Pierre-Paul Riquet in 1666.

Boats  are available for hire, or just enjoy  a 1 hour boat ride

Or even stroll along the banks of the canal under the shade of the avenue of Plane trees

Markets

Every one loves a market and these are just  a few in the area:-

Limoux a weekly general market on Fridays.  During the summer months of July and August there is a weekly night market on Tuesday,  plus a antiques market on the first Sunday of the month except September.

Mirepoix   weekly on Mondays set in a medieval square

Revel     huge and weekly on Saturdays situated mostly in the town square under a medieval market hall, but sprawls out along side streets.

Narbonne   weekly on Saturdays

Mirepoix,

Apart from the weekly market it is well worth a visit on it's own merit. A unique bastide town with the most interesting original medieval architecture.

Rennes le Chateau

Cathar Castles

There are several  fascinating castle ruins  in the area , well worth a visit, Peyrepertuse, Puilaurens, Montségur, Queribus, to name only four. Built by the Cathars as protection from the Albigensian crusaders.

Two of the many Cathar  Castles  in the area

                  Queribus      &          Peyreperteuse

 Caves and Grottos

 The prehistoric cave

There are far too many beautiful and interesting places to visit in the area for them all to get a mention on this site. But to find out more visit the local tourist office in Limoux. The staff there are extremely helpful, and they do speak English.
